Self-Compassion and Self-Love

Have you ever heard the saying, "You can't love someone else until you've loved yourself"? But, despite that saying, do you find it easier to love others than to love yourself?

This week, you'll learn how loving others can show you how to love parts of yourself, how to show yourself unconditional welcome when self-love feels difficult, and concrete techniques to start practicing self-love and self-compassion.

The Idea of the Week

“Everyone that you show unconditional welcome may show you a part of yourself to love.”
Karen Faith, TEDx Talks

Self-love can be difficult to practice. Karen Faith shares How to Talk to the Worst Parts of Yourself in a 15-minute TED Talk. She offers that if loving yourself is difficult, start with the person next to you: welcome them here, unconditionally and as they are right now, whether you know them or not. Then, shift to yourself, and unconditionally welcome yourself as you are right now.

What is self-love? And, how can we practice it? In this 5-minute read, you’ll learn what self-love is and 7 ways to incorporate self-love into your lifestyle.

Practice of the Week

Showing ourselves compassion is sometimes easier said than done, so here are 8 techniques from Verywell Health to practice self-compassion:

  1. Check your self-talk. When you launch into a degrading internal dialogue, pause and ask yourself, “How would I speak to a friend in this situation?” Then turn those encouraging and compassionate answers toward yourself.
  2. Forgive yourself by accepting responsibility, acknowledging your feelings, and then striving to repair the damage and commit to your values.
  3. Practice loving-kindness meditation.
  4. Celebrate your small accomplishments. Acknowledge the progress you have made, even if you don’t reach your Big Goal.
  5. Express gratitude. For example, keep a gratitude journal in which you write 3 things you’re grateful for at the end of each, or most, day(s).
  6. Practice acts of kindness for yourself. Check in with yourself, and ask, “What do I need right now?”
  7. Practice mindfulness.
  8. Reach out when you need help.
