The Idea of the Week
Our environment and the spaces we occupy every day have a big impact on our mental well-being. Think of a cluttered, filled-in space. Papers all over the desk. The pile of dishes grows. It’s hard to find your missing sock in the pile of clothes on that one chair where everything accumales.
Then think of a de-cluttered space. A space to breathe and move around.
In a cluttered space, we may tend to experience more overwhelm, anxiety, or feel closed in. Meanwhile, in a de-cluttered space, we may feel calmer and have clearer, focused thoughts. With the beginning of spring, now is a great time to try spring cleaning and tackle any clutter pile in your home. The change in season can sometimes give a natural boost for a fresh start. Beginning with our physical environment, see How Decluttering Your Home Might Help You Declutter Your Mind in this 7-minute article.
Our feelings can get in the way of cleaning. This 4-minute video outlines common psychological obstacles that arise when faced with cleaning, such as guilt and a scarcity mindset. Then, it offers tips for overcoming those barriers.
The Practice of the Week
This week, we challenge you to spring clean ONE area or thing in your home, your office, or even your car!
It does not have to be a huge project. Start small: clean one shelf in a room, one shelf in the fridge, one section of your desk, or one seat in the car.
Clearing out even just a small part can make a huge difference: one, you’ve shown yourself that the area can be cleaned, and two, you now have that clean shelf!
In this 12-minute video, Cas from Clutterbug offers Her Simple Spring Cleaning Routine, Fast and ADHD Friendly. As someone with ADHD, she shares tips that have helped her not get distracted and to stay on track with cleaning.
Another method is to use the Junebugging technique. Check out our 7-minute blog post on How to Overcome Procrastination for a breakdown on this technique.
Sometimes, even thinking about cleaning feels way too overwhelming (there is so much to do!). So, Jess from How to ADHD tackles feeling overwhelmed with the clutter in a 4-minute video.
Jess explains why the clutter feels overwhelming and the brain processes involved, then she tackles her clutter with a practical tip for cleaning: making a list.
The idea is to make a list of what needs to be cleaned for each room in your home. (The best part is that you’ll only need to make the list once!) Next, go to one room and tackle one piece on that list. Then, celebrate!
