The Idea of the Week
Check-ins are an opportunity to mindfully engage in your surroundings and experiences, or in self-reflection. When we check in with ourselves, we assess our emotional experiences and problem-solve ideas and actions to improve our situations.
There are many methods you can use to check in with yourself. Here are some ideas:
Once we have brought ourselves to the present, we can take the moment to ask ourselves questions and listen to our answers. You can ask and answer by
- journaling by typing on a computer or phone, writing with pen and paper, or using text-to-speech features;
- asking/answering yourself aloud;
- asking/answering yourself in your head;
- signing to yourself;
- asking/answering your reflection in a mirror;
- asking parts of yourself (e.g. asking the part of you that feels anxious or stressed or overwhelmed);
- answering by talking to your pets;
- answering by talking to stuffed animals or other inanimate objects that bring you comfort;
- answering yourself in the language and method that feels comfortable for you (even if it seems unconventional).
Practice of the Week
There are many ways to check in with yourself. We’ve curated a few questions to guide your check-in if you’re feeling stuck:
- What does my body feel like? Where do I notice any feelings?
- What emotions am I experiencing? Try to name the emotions or identify where you hold them in your body.
- What’s taking up most of my thoughts right now? Write your thoughts out. You may even want to try scribble writing (a 1 minute TikTok)!
- When and what was my last meal? Did I drink enough water today?
- What habits or practices have been working for me? What hasn’t been working for me?
