PTSD, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, is a mental health condition in which people experience a variety of symptoms that impair functioning after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event.

In recognition of PTSD Awareness Month, let’s deepen our understanding of trauma and PTSD. Read on to discover how you can join the movement to raise awareness.

The Idea of the Week

Let’s begin by understanding What Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is (a 10-minute article from Verywell Health). Did you know there are different types of PTSD? There are Acute Stress Disorder, Complex PTSD, Dissociative PTSD, and Uncomplicated PTSD. Read the article to learn more about the types, diagnosis, causes, and treatment of PTSD.

The Practice of the Week

Show your support, raise awareness, and get your steps in for the day. Complete 30 minutes of exercise at any time during the month of June in recognition of PTSD Awareness Day on June 27th.

  1. Register for the walk
  2. Download and print the Step Up for PTSD Awareness Virtual Walk bib
  3. Pin on your bib and get moving
  4. Take a photo of yourself doing a physical activity, such as walking, running, biking, rolling, or swimming
  5. Post your photo on social media and tag the National Center for PTSD (Tag us, too! @breathingspacepsychotherapy)

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs also curated a collection of resources for LGBTQ+ Veterans. This June, as part of PTSD Awareness Month, we encourage you to share these resources to support and raise awareness for LGBTQIA+ Veterans.

Triggers refer to cues that remind someone of a traumatic experience and result in a strong negative emotional reaction. When you experience a trigger, it can feel like you are experiencing the traumatic experience all over again. Yoga Therapy:
Healing the Mind and Body

Lindsey will be hosting a special 4-week trauma-focused series. Come learn about how your body responds to stress and trauma, followed by Vinyasa Flow Yoga.

This trauma-informed yoga workshop series consists of four sessions. The first half hour of the workshop will consist of psychoeducation covering topics such as the mind-body connection, physiology of trauma, mindfulness exercises, breathwork & more. Following this, students will be led through an hour-long dynamic vinyasa flow.

Each session will have a unique theme, specifically designed to target the body’s physiological reactions to stress and trauma. The themes are

  1. Release (focus on hips);
  2. Empower (power flow, focus on strengthening postures);
  3. Acceptance (focus on heart openers); and
  4. Peace (focus on balancing postures).

4 Session Series on 6/1, 6/8. 6/15, and 6/22. Sessions are 1 hour and 30 minutes, located at the Breathing Space Studio in Erieville, NY.

The workshop aims to educate and enlighten students about the power they possess to heal from trauma, and release stress.
