When you receive feedback, how are you receiving it?
Do you brace yourself and listen? Do you nod along to what the other person is saying, but don't hear a word or completely ignore it? Do you listen to all of it (sometimes eagerly, sometimes with a wince) and try to find a way to incorporate all of the feedback? Or, do you listen with an open mind, but filter it, using some aspects of the feedback but not all?
This week, we'll share tips on how to receive feedback.

The Idea of the Week

Receiving feedback is hard, but here is Jess’s trick (a 13-minute video) for handling feedback: not all of the feedback will be right, and some of the feedback you receive may actually be wrong.

Feedback is not black and white; you don’t have to accept it fully or reject it all. Rather, feedback is nuanced. You may incorporate some parts of the feedback. Or, maybe you don’t incorporate the feedback because the suggestion doesn’t feel right, but you look at why they gave feedback and adjust from there.

In the end, it’s your choice

Practice of the Week

One experience around receiving feedback is about the reception. When we are listening to the other person, nodding along, or perhaps struggling to keep calm.

But, in this 14-minute TEDx Talk, Shanita Williams acknowledges another experience: processing feedback. Once the person is gone, what are you telling yourself? Do the thoughts “I am not good enough” or “I am not valuable” arise? Shanita asks us to consider a selective approach: to process feedback through a strainer, not a sponge.

Finally, in a 10-minute video, Scott McKenna shares The Key to Receiving Feedback with a Growth Mindset.

Having a growth mindset means being open to the effort of achieving skills and abilities, even if it doesn’t come easily; whereas having a fixed mindset means holding limiting beliefs about your capabilities and capacity to improve.

When you receive feedback in a fixed mindset, your limiting beliefs interfere with your ability to listen and process. However, when you receive feedback with a growth mindset, you release your limiting beliefs and give yourself space to listen and choose the feedback you incorporate.

Join Tati, back by popular demand, for her next series of Family Constellations and Sharing of Ancestral Knowledge Workshops!

Tati owns a healing and psychotherapy practice working with sacred plant medicine, ancestral healing, and art therapy in her home in Ecuador.

In April, Tati visited the U.S. for the first time to hold workshops and healing sessions in Erieville and Fayetteville, NY, all of which had such a positive reception that people requested more! Join Tati for her return in October and the next series of workshops and healing sessions.

Family Constellations is a type of therapeutic approach that focuses on exploring the dynamics within a person’s family system, including their relationships with parents, siblings, grandparents, and other family members, even ancestors. This approach can be used to address a variety of issues, such as relationship difficulties, emotional blocks, and unresolved traumas.

This workshop involves a group of participants who come together to explore their own family dynamics through a series of exercises and discussions led by our facilitator, Tatian Davila, a psychotherapist, healer, and seeker of ancestral knowledge. Tati will offer 2 workshops as well as individual healings. The workshops will be held at Breathing Space Studio in Erieville, NY.

The Family Constellations Workshop will be held on October 28, 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm.

The Sharing of Ancestral Knowledge Workshop will be held on October 29, 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm.

Both workshops will be held at Breathing Space Studio
3455 Erieville Road
Erieville, NY 13061

Individual Healing Sessions will be held in Fayetteville, NY from October 30th through November 3rd.
