A support system is your group of individuals who provide you with practical or emotional support, respect, and care. They are the people you can rely on when you need them. They are the people in your corner.

But, what does a healthy support system look like? And, how can you build your own support system?

The Idea of the Week

Having a support system can help you build resiliency, give you a sense of belonging, and improve your mental health. A support system does not have to be large, nor is it only your friends and family. Your support system could include people in your community; it can be any social connection that has a positive influence on you.

In this 45-minute podcast, J & Courtney discuss what a healthy support system looks like and the misperceptions about support systems. One key highlight J & Courtney talk about is how you may single out different people in your support system at different times because they can provide you the support that you need at that moment.

Practice of the Week

Build your support system by first taking note of your people: Who supports you? Who makes you feel happier? Who checks in on you? Who drains you?

This pdf, “Building A Support System Information Worksheet,” shares why we need a support system, the benefits of having a support system, the four types of social support, and how to build your support system, including a worksheet to review and reflect on your support system.
