Social Scripts

We usually think of mindfulness as noticing our breath or paying attention to the present moment, but there’s another angle: noticing the little storylines our brain creates from everyday life. Instead of drifting through routines on autopilot, we invite you to bring awareness to your expectations and the “scripts” we follow without even realizing it.

Wall of Awful

While you likely will not find this in a conventional horror story, the scariest things sometimes are the tasks on our to-do list. So this week, let’s understand why this happens and why the “just do it” mentality is not helpful.

Resilience

Resiliency is not about pushing and brute forcing your way forward through pain, anguish, or “laziness.” It’s about your ability to bounce back, to stand up 8 times when you fall 7 seven times.

And, sometimes, that “bounce back” looks delayed because you needed to rest. That’s okay.

Create Memories Together

When you think back on your year, does life quickly turn drab and boring? Days bleed into each other. Weeks glob together. Months pass by until the year looks like one giant blob that is hard to tease one day from the next. Maybe you remember your (too short) vacation, the few family get-togethers, and a little bit from the holidays. You recall a few highlights in the year, like a wedding or the first day on a job.

Celebrate Your Wins

You set a goal. Maybe it’s the New Year’s Resolution, or a goal you’ve wanted to do for a long time, or something you just created. So, you’ve got this goal, and in the beginning, you start making moves. You take steps towards your goal. They’re small, sure, but you feel yourself making progress. You hit a daily streak, then a weekly streak. You feel good, excited, challenged, yet motivated.

Flash forward to months later, are you still holding onto those feelings? Are you still working on the goal, or did you drop it when you didn’t make a Big Win in a month? If you’re still working on the goal, do you feel like you’re making progress?

If you do, then take the moment to reflect on what you do to keep going and feel like you’re making progress. If you don’t, then let’s uncover why you need to celebrate your small wins.

National Day of Joy

When the weekend hits, then I’ll be happy.
When I finally land my dream job, start a family, or my dream home, then I’ll be happy.
Once this stress is gone, then I’ll be happy.

Notice a pattern? We often wait for change to happen to us before we allow ourselves to be happy, as though happiness is something that happens to you.

What if happiness is something you do—something you create?
