The Idea of the Week
Non-negotiables are commitments to ourselves. In a 7-minute podcast, Dora Kamau from Headspace shares examples of her non-negotiables: these are the things she does no matter what happens because not doing them makes her feel unbalanced or off. Dora will take you through a meditation that guides you through discovering what you need at this moment and what commitments you can make to meet your needs.
When we think of relationships, one of the first words that come to mind is “compromise”—to make a relationship work, you have to be ready to give something up. In this 13-minute TEDx Talk, Kari-Shane Zimmerman Davis offers a different perspective, one that focuses on not compromising: your non-negotiables. Identifying and naming your non-negotiables will set the foundation for knowing your boundaries.
Practice of the Week
Here are some reflection prompts from Kari-Shane’s TEDx Talk: Think about the past 5, 10, 15 years,
- Who have you become?
- What have you wanted?
- What’s gone well?
- What hasn’t gone well?
- What means the most to you that you don’t want to compromise on?
- The thing you do every single day, what is there about it that drives or energizes you?
- Is there a need for change? Is there a need to step out and re-evaluate?
In this 15-minute video, Rowena Tsai shares how she organizes and plans her calendar by first prioritizing her non-negotiables and blocking them into her calendar before adding work-related tasks. Rowena offers two questions to discover what your non-negotiables are:
- What fuels my soul?
- What gives me the most energy?
Reminder: You don’t do this process just once. Revisit this process again and again throughout your life, and communicate your non-negotiables in your relationships.
