Routine 

Do you prefer your days to be casually spontaneous or structured by routine? Even if you tend to scroll on when you see the word “routine,” we all subject ourselves to a degree of routine without knowing it. We tend to group our habits, such as brushing our teeth, making dinner, driving to work, or visiting family on the weekends, to certain times in our day, week, or year. As helpful as routines are, it can be difficult to create a new routine when you’ve had a routine (no matter how loosely or rigidly structured).

So, whether your days feel rigidly stagnant or hectic with no stability, this week, we’re learning how to build a meaningful routine that we actually enjoy!

Sleep Hygiene

Sleep is a precious thing, not only because of all the mental and physical health benefits, but just simply because we’re often tired and it has become a scarcity. Sometimes our work or commitments pull us away from a full, restful night’s sleep, and other times we toss and turn, struggling to fall asleep. Or, maybe we find ourselves more productive at night and tend to push off sleep in favor of (finally!) getting some work done.

Noise Colors

So, you’re sitting at your desk, trying to get your work done—you’ve got a long day of work ahead of you and a big pile of tasks to work through. But then your workmates start chattering down the hall, and then the heater finally kicks on and begins humming; you hear the cars as they drive by, the clock is ticking, and…all the noises make it difficult to concentrate on your work.

Or, maybe you find it difficult to fall asleep because it’s either too noisy or completely silent.

One way to combat unwanted noise or silence is to listen to noise colors. This week, we’ll learn about the different colors of sound.

Humans are social creatures. We make numerous types of connections with others throughout our lives: familial relationships, friendships, romantic partners, professional relationships with co-workers, and friendly relationships with our community; we even create connections with animals and our pets, plus we can have connections with others, not only in-person, but online as well!

Connecting with others is a basic human need, but sometimes it’s difficult to take the first step to reach out or connect with someone.

You’re Not Lazy, You’re Procrastinating: How to Overcome Procrastination

We’ve done it time and time again: scrolled through cute cat videos when we “should” be working on a term paper, or played games when we’re “supposed” to be cleaning the house. Or maybe we’re watching a video or reading an article (like this one!) about how to cure our persistent tendency to procrastinate…when we were “supposed” to be working.

As a consequence, we may push the task off again and again, then rush to complete the task just before it’s due. We may also call ourselves “lazy” and shame ourselves for not completing a task early or in a timely manner. And, when we continue to procrastinate, rush to complete, and shame ourselves, we fall back into the cycle of procrastination, and it can be difficult, even overwhelming, to break free from the habit and actually feel accomplished with the tasks we have completed.

Check in with Yourself Using Journal Prompts

We’ve covered a lot of topics over the summer: we have learned
about the grieving process and how to cope with grief,
how to befriend our body,
how to mindfully color,
how to overcome procrastination and build discipline,
and last week, we learned how to build healthier relationships with social media.

Whew! That’s a lot to take in! And understandably, it can feel overwhelming, so this week, let’s pause and check in with ourselves.

Relationship with Social Media

Social media is pervasive and unavoidable. You may use social media not only during your leisure but also for work or school. We may know that we shouldn’t be spending so much time on social media—the countless articles and studies have shown us time and time again how social media can negatively impact our mental health. But still, we get stuck into bad habits, mindless scrolling, comparing ourselves to others, and an unpleasant algorithm.
