Do you prefer your days to be casually spontaneous or structured by routine? Even if you tend to scroll on when you see the word "routine," we all subject ourselves to a degree of routine without knowing it. We tend to group our habits, such as brushing our teeth, making dinner, driving to work, or visiting family on the weekends, to certain times in our day, week, or year. As helpful as routines are, it can be difficult to create a new routine when you've had a routine (no matter how loosely or rigidly structured).

So, whether your days feel rigidly stagnant or hectic with no stability, this week, we're learning how to build a meaningful routine that we actually enjoy!

The Idea of the Week

Even if you don’t thrive on routine or would prefer casual spontaneity in your days, having a structure to your day and implementing routines help provide stability and give you a sense of control in stressful, unpredictable, or uncertain times. In this 7-minute read from VeryWellMind, you’ll learn how a lack of structure can affect mood, the benefits of having a routine, and reminders for creating and implementing a routine.

Do you race through your week for the weekend when you’ll finally catch your breath; Friday finally arrives and you have your entire weekend ahead of you! You think of all the things you can do … but overwhelm yourself, blink, and it’s suddenly Sunday evening; you’re back to the grind tomorrow yet you feel like you didn’t accomplish anything this weekend. In this 16-minute podcast, Rowena Tsai shares 12 simple, practical steps to create a restful yet productive weekend routine

❝Game plans, even the most detailed ones, exist to help us and to serve us; not to make us feel even more guilty, less than, or not enough for doing things that we initially planned.❞
–Rowena Tsai

Practice of the Week

In another 13-minute video, Rowena Tsai shares how to create a realistic morning routine by first considering our “social” and “essential” selves in our morning routine: how much of our routine is rooted in what we want to do (essential) and what we think we should do (social). Rowena came up with 3 questions to assess what our essential selves want, and this week, we invite you to pause and reassess your routine by considering these questions:

  1. What makes me excited?
  2. What brings me peace?
  3. What brings me joy?

In this 8-minute podcast, Leah from Girl, Glow Up shares tips to create a routine and stick with it. An important tip from this episode is to make your routine fun!

❝Anything that is going to help you enjoy your routine, or enjoy a new task, is worth investing in.❞
–Leah from Girl, Glow Up
