The Idea of the Week
The color of noise refers to a spectrum of noise signals in which different colors of noise have different properties. The most commonly known noise color is white noise, which may be described as “static.” In this 4-minute video, you’ll learn about 3 noise colors: white, pink (a 6-minute read that answers frequently asked questions about pink noise and mental health), and brown noise.
Practice of the Week
How can we use noise color?
Noise color is helpful to mask unwanted sounds in your environment that you can’t control so that you can concentrate or fall asleep easier. Some people find that white noise helps them fall asleep at night (a 5-minute read), while other people find white noise is too loud and more distracting and annoying than helpful.
Identify what noise color works for you.
You may have to experiment with the different noise colors for a while until you find a good fit for you. You can listen to noise colors on YouTube by searching for the color of noise you want to listen to. For instance, searching for “brown noise” will yield a page of YouTube videos of brown noise playing for 6 or 10 hours long.
While we only covered 3 noise colors today, there are many more colors of sound! So, if these 3 colors don’t work for you, you can try searching for more colors.
