Did you know the brain can change and adapt at any age? Thanks to neuroplasticity, which is the brain's ability to change and adapt, this means we are never too old to change, learn, adapt, and heal.

Let's take a closer look at what neuroplasticity is, how we can use it to foster mental health, and how we can improve our brain's ability to change.

The Idea of the Week

First, let’s break down the word “neuroplasticity”:

  • neuro refers to neurons, which are the building blocks of the nervous system; and
  • plasticity refers to the brain’s malleability, or ability to change.

The core concept of neuroplasticity is best explained by the line:

Neurons that fire together, wire together.

This means that when brain cells frequently communicate (i.e. when we do an activity repetitively), then the connection between those cells strengthens. When those connections strengthen, then messages that travel those pathways transmit faster. That’s why we practice and study; the first time we do an activity may be difficult, but with enough repetition, the activity will become easier.

This PsychologyToday article explains the science of neuroplasticity, how it works in our day-to-day life, and how we can stimulate neuroplasticity.

Practice of the Week

We can stimulate and improve our brain’s malleability by using our mind and body. Here are 10 ways you can use your mind and body to improve neuroplasticity.

In this 15-minute video, Emma McAdam shares how you can rewire the anxious brain by taking advantage of neuroplasticity. She shares the anxiety cycle, how avoidance feeds anxiety, 3 things to understand about anxiety, and 3 steps to overcome anxiety by using neuroplasticity.
