The Idea of the Week
Feng Shui is a Chinese concept that focuses on creating harmony between the person and their environment. This is accomplished by designing your home to facilitate balance and flow in your home.
Even if you do not believe in this practice, there are also practical principles from Feng Shui that you can incorporate into your home. “Dear Modern” on YouTube explains these simple, practical Feng Shui principles that you can consider when planning your home design, all in 7 minutes.
The main idea “Dear Modern” points out is that as you move around in your home, there are clear pathways between the zones, such as between the dining space and the living room.
If you place a couch in the middle of this path, you block this flow and create tension.
Whereas, if you place the couch where it clearly divides the living space from the dining space without blocking the path, then you can facilitate the flow and designate zones.
In this next 4-minute video, Sung Yoo shares the Top Feng Shui Do’s and Don’ts, easy steps to maximize the positive flow of energy in your home.
If you do have control over the furniture in your workspace, then “Dear Modern” demonstrates the practical principles of Feng Shui behind placing a desk to feel good. When we spend a lot of time working, it is worth putting in the energy to create a space that feels good and can facilitate our productivity!
The Practice of the Week
Let’s awaken the energy in our homes again! This 10-minute video shares several ways to invite the elements into your home. We’ve highlighted 10 of these practices below:
- Declutter. This is the most frequently provided tip when building good energy in your home. Visible clutter can overwhelm the brain, and sometimes make it harder to focus because you’re processing all the items in your space.
- Everything has a space. Notice where clutter tends to build up and make it a designated space so the space becomes practical and functional. For instance, your nightstand regularly becomes cluttered, and you constantly have to move your jewelry back to the jewelry case, the books back onto the shelf, and the charger back to your desk. Instead of letting the pile grow, turn the nightstand into their “rightful” place. Create a mini bookshelf, add a small bowl for the jewelry, and create a charging station. Now, the space isn’t cluttered; it’s intentional.
- Rearrange furniture. Lean on the principles of Feng Shui to find the flow of energy in your house and to work with this flow.
- Energize your space through sound. Whether you add some music, hang some chimes, or use a sound bowl for your meditation practices, sound is a great way to set the mood and bring your home to life. - Display what you use.
- Bring the outside, inside. Add some plants to your home. Though be sure that they aren’t toxic to your pets!
- Let the sun shine in.
- Add color to your room. Colors like yellow, orange, and brown can add a warm tone to your room.
- When the weather allows, open windows to let fresh air in.
- Bonus idea: If you enjoy crocheting or sewing, try making a throw pillow to add to your home. If you enjoy painting or drawing, hang some of your art in your home. If you love making crafts, craft something functional or just for fun to add to your home. You can print your personal photos at Walmart and hang them in frames, or make fun crafts out of them like this! The point is: bring your home to life with you, your personality, and energy. Fill your home with things you love.
