The Idea of the Week
In this 23-minute video, Dr. K shares the Neuroscience of Living Without Regret (content warning: mentions of death and dying). Regret may manifest in three ways:
- You regret the past and are stuck on these past actions. Your mind is occupied with the past to the point that you do not know where to begin solving your problems.
- Paralysis in the present.
- You are efficiency-oriented and strive to make everything perfect. Even when you do a good job, you still beat yourself up because of the mistakes you made.
At the close of the video, Dr. K also shares a meditation to distance yourself from the experience of regret and learn to witness the experience. It may take a long period of time to continuously practice the meditation, but you will start to discover that you have fewer regrets as you learn to sit with the experience.
The Practice of the Week
Regret is powerful and heavy and can sometimes be accompanied by shame. These feelings can feel so uncomfortable that we avoid them even though they continue to cling and haunt us. How do we work through the regret and push on without it holding us back from making decisions?
In these 2 articles, Verywell Mind shares How to Cope with Regret and Move Forward:
- Practice Self-Acceptance: Acknowledge and accept your feelings.
- Forgive yourself: everyone makes mistakes; this is how you grow. Forgiving yourself also means making the deliberate choice to let go of the anger, resentment, or disappointment you feel about yourself.
- Apologize for mistakes: apologize to others who may have been affected to show them you feel remorse and you empathize with them.
- Reframe it and Take Action: Instead of ruminating over what you could have done, reframe it as a learning opportunity for you to change what you will do in the future.
