The Idea of the Week
This time of year inspires many year-end reviews and reflections—your most listened-to songs, books you’ve read, movies you’ve watched, big accomplishments, memorable experiences, places you’ve visited, and those popular recap videos.
As we look back, we also turn forward to new year predictions and anticipations—upcoming trips (like our Puerto Rico Retreat in just a few weeks!), anticipated book and movie releases, new projects, skills to develop, and destinations to explore.
This blend of reflection and anticipation often sparks an invigorating energy, encouraging us to join in on the tradition of reflecting and making resolutions for the new year. As you reflect, embrace the lessons learned and consider how these moments can shape your approach to meaningful goals.
What systems will you need to cultivate to live out your goals? Check out this 14-minute video by Rowena Tsai, “The one habit that is changing my life: Set systems rather than goals,” to inspire and guide your goal-setting process as you prepare for the year ahead.
The Practice of the Week
As we leave 2024 and enter 2025, below we have provided some fun, creative reflection prompts and activities for you to check in with yourself, your year, and what awaits you in the new year.
Journal Prompts
- What energies, habits, thoughts, behaviors, etc., are you leaving behind in 2024? What is no longer serving you?
- What energies, thoughts, etc. Are you inviting in 2025?
- What are your most joyful and proud moments? What accomplishment, big or small, made you feel proud and fulfilled?
- What made you laugh and smile this year?
- What was your key theme for this past year?
- What word would you use to describe the past year? What word do you want to call in for the new year?
- What did you discover about yourself this year?
- What challenges did you face this year? What disappointed you this year that may still affect you today?
- What acts of kindness, big or small, did you give or receive this year?
- What activities made you feel most energized?
- What are three experiences, traditions, or new, that you want to have next year?
- What would you like to learn about yourself?
- Who or what are you grateful for this year?
- Who had the most positive influence on you this year, and how did they support your growth? What were your most memorable moments of connection with friends, family, or your community this year?
- What relationships do you want to strengthen or repair in the upcoming year? How can you show up more intentionally in your social life?
Reflection & New Year Activities
- Do a Tarot card spread. If you have a deck of Tarot or Oracle cards, use them for a fun, intuitive reflection on your year. You can look up “End of Year Reflection Tarot Spread” or “New Year Tarot Spread” for spread ideas.
- Make a vision board. Vision boards are a great way to visualize your favorite memories and accomplishments from the past year, or to visualize your goals and aspirations for the new year. Use photos, magazine clippings, or digital tools like Canva (which is free!) to make your board come to life.
- Make a Memory Jar for the new year. Throughout the year, add small notes or mementos of positive moments to a jar. So, at the end of the year, you can read through them and remember those moments.
- Draw a “relationship map” showing all the meaningful connections in your life. Have you played the Game of Life? It’s similar, but instead of career paths or houses, you’re mapping out your personal connections, moments of growth, gratitude, memories, etc.
- Year-in-Review Playlist. Curate a playlist of songs that represent your year, like you are making your own soundtrack for the year of 2024!
- Create a time capsule. Gather objects, photos, or write a letter to your future self, and put them in a box or jar as a 2024 time capsule. You can also include: reflections of the year, your hopes for the new year, a bucket list, receipts or menus, ticket stubs, playlist (you can download and print a QR code or Spotify code of your playlist), souvenirs, awards, newspapers, quotes or mantras, and predictions. Make sure to secure the box and label it before storing it away for the end of next year!
- Create a highlight reel, slideshow, or scrapbook with your photos, social media posts, or journal entries.
- Write a letter to someone significant from the past year. What do you appreciate about them? What lessons did you learn from them? What did you learn about them? If you would like, send them the letter. Or add it to your time capsule.
