The Idea of the Week
Why is Mental Health Awareness Month important?
Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month—founded by Mental Health America—has been dedicated to dismantling stigma, educating the public, and advocating for public policies and resources for mental health care.
Despite progress, misconceptions and stigma around mental illness still affect how people seek care and support. The movement remains vital to:
- Reduce the stigma and misconceptions around mental health,
- Promote awareness and education,
- Encourage prevention and intervention strategies to care for communities’ mental well-being,
- Encourage individuals to seek help and support for their mental well-being, and
- Advocate for accessible resources, policies, and support.
