The Idea of the Week
If you find yourself rushing every morning to get to work or to another responsibility you have, your rushed morning will likely set the tone for a rushed day. When we slow down and soak in our morning, we can set the tone for a slow and mindful day. Rowena Tsai discusses how to love your mornings and make them meaningful in a 14-minute video.
Now that we have a foundation for our slow, mindful, and intentional day, let’s uncover some techniques to carry this energy through the day. Verywell Mind shares How to Become More Mindful in Your Everyday Life (a 7-minute reading).
The Practice of the Week
Rowena Tsai shares 7 life-changing soft habits for a more mindful existence in a 15-minute video.
- Putting in the 1%, such as remembering people’s names even if this is the only moment you will see them or you’ll only see them in passing.
- Early is on time (on time is late and late is late).
- Be a kind person not only externally (what people see) but your inner heart. Have your heart be rooted in compassion.
- Talk to strangers. We are continuously learning from others; be genuinely curious about learning from someone.
- Serving others first, especially in small ways. Rowena shares a wonderful example of this in the video.
- Be glass half full. What do you want to spend your time and energy on: focusing on the negative or focusing on the positive?
- Unconditionally look inward. Take everything in life as a learning experience. Continuously self reflect.
Some people in the comments also shared their soft habits. Here they are:
- Always thanking the bus driver
- Not using self-deprecating language
- Leaving positive reviews and sending thank-you notes after receiving good service
- Thanking waiters when they top my water glass at a meal
- Saying thank you no matter how small someone’s actions are towards you
- Saying yes to new experiences
- Being consistently and randomly kind to strangers, such as smiling, holding the door, wishing them a good day
- Giving people grace or the benefit of the doubt
- Assuming and trusting that people have good intentions
- Practicing active listening and not interrupting people
- Prioritizing connection over being perfectly right
- Holding space for each of my emotions, even the “bad” ones
- Learning to relax and following my intuition
- and so much more! Check out the comments in Rowena’s video for more soft habits.
